1. Look out for the quiet seasons and confront passive-aggressive people without hesitation
Silence can be dangerous. When the atmosphere around you is quiet, don’t assume everyone is content with your leadership. Often in those quiet seasons, leaders can be misrepresented in the form of rumors and become faced with the challenge of defending themselves long after damage control can be easily attained.
Rely on those closest to you to tell you the truth.
Do what you can to resolve the problem immediately.
We all know them – the people who are the first to compliment us face to face, but talk a completely different talk when we leave the room. Confronting a passive-aggressive person is never comfortable, but for the sake of the church’s health, the leader should go directly to the source prepared to openly dialogue and end the drama. Shut it down as soon as you can.
2. Leadership and Management are two very different things
Church culture has watered down the word leader. There’s been an accidental trend to overuse the title and combine it within a management role. But most people can’t excel at both well – at least not for a long span of time – because each job usually calls for very different personality types.
Managers respond to the day-to-day needs; maintaining efficiency and structure while reducing friction and chaos. Leaders look ahead to what’s coming next and focus on where they want to go long-term.
Both roles are necessary and needed. They are not the same, but equally important to a healthy, growing organization.
3. There are necessary times to hold on to control, but you have to know when to let it go
Most leaders struggle with control. Some more extremely than others, but it’s an issue we all face. There are times it’s necessary to hold close to all the details and decisions around you – like church planting or seasons of big change. Beyond that, how do you know when to back off and allow others to share in your load? Here are three signs it’s time to let go:
- When you’re losing effectiveness
- When you feel tension and burdened
- When others who care about you suggest you take a break
Avoid the possibility of burning out. Trust that the people you’ve placed to support your organization will do what’s needed. You can’t do it all on your own.
