I am honored to lead the Resources Division at LifeWay and serve with a team of leaders who are passionate to serve the Church in her mission of making disciples. Each Wednesday, I share the heart behind one of the resources our team has developed. I then give readers an opportunity to register to win a free copy of that resource. This week’s giveaway is a collection of resources from
The Gospel Project is a Christ-centered Bible study for all ages that shows how all Scripture points to redemption through Jesus Christ, and drives participants to be on mission. Today, I want to share about the good news the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus have for kids.
The Bible isn’t always an easy book to teach to kids. Although there are so many great stories to share, there are also many that need to be handled very delicately. Jacob’s family situation, David and Bathsheba, and a number of Jesus’ parables and miracles come to mind… And then there’s the climax of His earthly ministry, the entire reason He came to earth as a baby and lived a perfect human life: His death, resurrection, and ascension.
Let’s face it: this is a heavy topic for kids. But it is so important for them to understand and rejoice in. Why? Three reasons:
1. Kids need to know the seriousness of sin.
We all want to pretend like kids are immune from sin. I have two girls. I love them to pieces. But they do sin—and it’s not just because their dad is a sinner! It’s part of the human condition in a fallen world. But more than that, they need to know that sin really is serious, so serious that it cost Jesus His life to rescue us.
2. Kids need to know that Jesus is bigger than sin.
As serious as sin is, as much as it cost Jesus, kids need to know that He is bigger than sin. Even little kids can feel overwhelmed by sin in their lives. But Jesus’ resurrection is a declaration: sin is defeated. No longer do any of us, no matter our age, have to live under its crushing weight. Jesus promises rescue to anyone who trusts in Him.
3. Kids need to know Jesus is helping put an end to sin in our lives every day.
When Jesus rose again, He promised the Holy Spirit would come when He returned to heaven. And the Spirit did! He came to help us trust and obey Him. Day by day He gives everyone who trusts in Jesus the ability to say no to sin, He helps us to love God more than anything, and He helps us to worship the only One worthy of our praise.
The end of Jesus’ ministry here on earth is such great news for kids (and adults too!). It’s great news we can’t hold back from them. Kids need to know just how amazingly good Jesus really is—how much bigger and better He is than anything else the world has to offer. They need a foundation for worship. And there’s no better foundation than the risen Christ.
